Socialization of Older Adults: The Key to a Healthy Lifestyle

As we age, socialization and staying active year-round become increasingly important for maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life. According to a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated. Research has shown that social isolation, such as living alone, and loneliness can have negative effects on the mental and physical well-being of older adults. Here are a few ways to decrease social isolation:

Technology
Technology is one way to potentially help decrease social isolation among older adults. Throughout a four-year research period, older adults who had access to such technology consistently showed a 31% lower risk for social isolation compared to the rest of the group.

Access to technology, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers, can help older adults stay connected with loved ones, access information, and participate in virtual social activities. It’s important to ensure that older adults have the knowledge and resources to use these technologies effectively.

Community Engagement
Beyond technology, community engagement remains a powerful tool to combat social isolation. Encouraging older adults to participate in local clubs, volunteer work, or group activities can provide them with a sense of purpose and connection.

Family and Friends
Family members and friends play a pivotal role in combating social isolation. Regular visits, phone calls, and video chats can go a long way in maintaining social connections and offering emotional support.

Awareness and Support
Recognizing the signs of social isolation and loneliness is the first step in addressing these issues. Healthcare providers, caregivers, and community organizations should be on the lookout to identify individuals at risk and provide appropriate support and resources.

Addressing social isolation and loneliness among older adults is not only a matter of improving their quality of life, but also essential for their overall health and well-being. The positive impact of technology and the support of communities and loved ones can make a significant difference in the lives of older adults.

Let’s work together to ensure that our seniors are socially connected throughout their later life in our community. For the first time ever, USS is piloting “winter hours” and will be open Saturdays 8:00am – 12:00pm for activities including billiards and pickleball, as well as the fitness and aquatics centers, beginning October 7, 2023 through March 30, 2024. For questions about the winter hours, contact our downtown office at 937-323-4948.
