Staying Safe Online

As we spend more time online in this day and age, it’s important to take caution. Scammers are everywhere, and they often try to trick people with fake offers, false news or requests from people you don’t know. It can be hard to tell what’s real and what’s fake online but, by being cautious, you can protect yourself from scams.
Here are some simple tips to help you stay safe online:
1. Be Wary of Unfamiliar Messages
If someone you don’t know sends you a message (ex: email, Facebook message, etc), offers a prize or asks you to join a get-rich-quick plan, be cautious. Scammers will try to gain your trust by offering things that sound too good to be true. Don’t click on links or respond to messages from people or organizations you don’t know.
2. Think Before You Click
Clicking on suspicious links can lead to trouble, like giving a scammer access to your personal information. Always double-check where a link comes from. If you’re unsure, type the business name into your browser to go directly to the official website of the organization or call them to verify if the message is real. Never click a link or call a phone number in the suspicious message or email.
3. Stick to Trusted Sources
It’s a good idea to limit your online activity to people, businesses and news sources you trust. Social media and websites can be full of untrustworthy information. Interacting with friends, family and known companies online is a safer way to stay connected and avoid scams.
4. Watch Out for Fake News
Sometimes, what you read or see online isn’t real. Scammers may use fake stories to entice you to click on something or share false information. If a story sounds strange or unbelievable, check with a trusted news source before believing or sharing it.
5. Use Strong Passwords
Protect your accounts by using strong passwords of 12 or more characters. Try not to use the same password for everything, and if a website offers two-factor authentication (2FA), use it! This adds extra security, making it harder for scammers to get into your accounts.
6. Be Cautious with New Technology
New technology, like artificial intelligence (AI), is making it easier for scammers to create convincing fake stories, photos or even videos. If something seems unusual or designed to cause a strong reaction, take a moment to double-check it before trusting it.
7. Report Scams
If you come across something suspicious online, report it. Most websites and social media platforms let you flag or report suspicious emails and posts. This helps keep others safe, too.
By staying cautious and mindful of what you interact with online, you can protect yourself from scams and misinformation. Trust your instincts, stay informed and engage only with reliable sources to keep your online experience safe and secure.
