Senior Living Options: Starting the Conversation

Senior Living Options: Starting the Conversation

As our parents grow older, it becomes increasingly important to have conversations about their living arrangements and future care. Whether they prefer to age at home, move in with family, or explore other senior living options, starting these discussions early can help ease the transition.

Encourage them to express their desires and concerns, ensuring that their voices are heard. By understanding their wishes, you can actively support and plan for their future needs.

Aging in Place, Enhancing Existing Homes

If your parents want to age in their current home and later move in with family, early planning can be beneficial. Early planning allows time to consider potential modifications or additions to the existing home, like making them more accessible and accommodating. Some towns even permit the construction of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), but it’s important to be aware of permits and city guidelines to ensure compliance by checking with your local city or county.

Exploring Different Senior Living Options

Senior living options often vary in terms of care levels and amenities offered. It is important to understand the level of care provided by each option and whether they can accommodate higher care needs if they arise in the future. Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) are one such option that offers a range of care services within a single community, allowing residents to transition easily as their needs change.

Utilizing Your Resources

Navigating senior living options can be overwhelming. Fortunately, there are providers available who specialize in this field and can assist you in finding the best option for you and your parents. These professionals have a vast knowledge of the various options available in specific areas and can help match your parents’ wants and needs to suitable communities.

Your local senior center (which is USS if your parents or other aging loved ones are in Clark County) or council on aging can be valuable resources when researching senior living options. They often provide comprehensive lists of resources, services, and programs available in your area. These organizations may offer assistance with aging in place, such as Meals on Wheels, in-home care, transportation services and more. Reaching out to your local council on aging or senior center can provide you with a starting point and connect you with the resources you need.

Initiating conversations about senior living options with your parents is a proactive step toward ensuring their well-being and happiness as they age. By discussing their preferences, considering future care needs, and using the expertise of senior living providers, you can find the most suitable living arrangement for your loved ones.

USS invites members of the community to our third annual Senior Living Resource Fair set for Thursday, June 8, 2023, 2:30pm – 5:30pm. The event will take place at USS’s downtown center (125 W Main St.). Attendance is free and the event is open to all older adults and their families.
