United Senior Services Awarded Grant to Help Seniors Live Well at Home

The USS team has significantly enhanced the services available to older adults in Clark County, thanks to The Healthy Aging Grant of $450,000. This grant directly addresses the needs identified by our community in a recent study and aligns perfectly with USS’s mission of supporting active, involved lifestyles and independent living. This grant funding will be in effect until the end of September.

Understanding the Needs of Our Community

Clark County demographics paint a clear picture:

  • 33% of the population is aged 55 or older, with 20% aged 65 or older.
  • The poverty rate sits at 16%, exceeding state and national averages.
  • The average life expectancy falls below state and national levels.

These statistics highlight the importance of providing resources that support our aging population.

The 2022 USS Community Study: Listening to Our Members

Our 2022 study, conducted in partnership with the Area Agency on Aging, surveyed over 25,000 Clark County residents aged 55 and above. The overwhelming response rate validates the valuable insights we gained:

  • Top priorities for successful aging: Safety and home modifications, trusted resources, in-home services, social connection and family caregiver support.
  • 67% identified USS as their first point of contact for needs.
  • 26% require services now, but 46% fear they can’t afford them.

These findings directly shaped our request for the Healthy Aging Grant.

Focus on Safety, Nutrition and Connectedness

The grant funding will be used for three key programs:

  • Safety at Home Program: This program offers home modifications, repairs and maintenance services to eligible homeowners ages 60+. This helps them address safety hazards and remain independent in their homes for as long as possible.
  • Nutrition Assistance Program:
    • Meals on Wheels: This program delivers nutritious meals to homebound individuals, ensuring they receive proper nutrition and a daily safety check.
    • Congregate Dining: We expanded congregate dining sites with new locations in Moorefield Township, Bethel Township and Sunrise Terrace in New Carlisle.. All of our locations offer nutritious meals and a chance to socialize with peers for those who can still drive.
  • Connectivity Program: This program helps older adults learn and use technology safely and confidently. This allows them to connect with loved ones virtually, participate in online activities and manage daily tasks.

Who is Eligible?

These programs are available to Clark County residents ages 60+ who meet income eligibility requirements.

How to Get Involved:

  • Call USS at 937-323-4948 or email info@ussohio.org to learn more and see if you qualify.
  • You don’t need to be a USS member to access these services.

Together, we can help our older neighbors live safely, nourished and connected in their own homes!
