USS Celebrates National Senior Center Month, Powering Connections for Older Adults

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (Sept. 27, 2024) – September marks National Senior Center Month, an annual awareness campaign sponsored by the National Council on Aging (NCOA), shining a spotlight on the invaluable role senior centers play in enhancing the lives of older adults. This year’s theme, Powering Connections, highlights how senior centers help older adults foster friendships, improve their health and access essential benefits programs, all while enjoying new experiences.

Senior centers across the country, including USS, the leading advocate, community resource and change agent for people age 55+ across Clark County, , are raising awareness of the diverse range of services available to older adults.

“Senior centers are more than just a place to gather; they are hubs for wellness, learning and social connection,” said Maureen Fagans, USS executive director. “We’re proud to offer our members a wide variety of activities, from fitness classes and health screenings to educational workshops, social events and volunteer opportunities. It’s about enriching lives and empowering older adults to live with purpose.”

Since their establishment in the 1940s and formal inclusion in the Older Americans Act in 1973, the nation’s 11,000+ senior centers have empowered older adults to age with dignity, health, and financial stability. This year, as the Older Americans Act comes up for reauthorization, NCOA is advocating for the modernization of senior centers nationwide, ensuring every older adult has access to a supportive community.

In Clark County, USS remains committed to offering innovative programming and services that reflect the changing needs of today’s seniors. With over 5,300 active members, the center continues to be a crucial resource for the community.

USS members enjoy year-round access to programs and other opportunities that focus on enhancing their quality of life through:

  • Health and Wellness: Fitness programs designed for older adults, including yoga, strength training and balance exercises.
  • Social Engagement: Regular outings, travel opportunities and social events, providing opportunities to meet new people and strengthen community ties.
  • Creative and Educational Opportunities: Arts classes, lifelong learning programs and new skill workshops, such as technology courses and learning a new language.
